Ok let me try this again since obviously typing with a cat in my lap while
talking on the phone didn't work :-)
1. the SE machine can ping 192.168.0.1 which is the router
the SE machine can pimg 192.168.0.3 which is the XP machine
2. the XP machine can ping 192.168.0.1 which is the router
the XP machine times out pinging 192.168.0.2 which is the XP machine
3. I tried dhcp and it didn't improve anything and I use fixed IPs because I
like knowing exactly who is who
4. I have no floppy on the laptop so I can create the mystical networking
wizard floppy; the XP that came with the laptop is one of those dreadful
rescue disks and won't load on the desktop. I called toshiba, got a moron
who was supposed to transfer me to a networking dude and disconnected me
instead
5. I have netbui on the desktop -- the question is how to get it on the
notebook
6. it's kind of strange IMHO that when I boot the notebook (XP) it does not
ask for a logon, just dumps me in the administrator account
7. the logon to the desktop has no password ...
