I've been googling for hours without gaining any real concept of what's going on. And my app RegCure won't run anymore because it can write a backup copy of the reg file to C: drive -- related? And Firefox crashed (permanently) the same day, it wouldn't run javascripts. I called Ameritrade, they had me uninstall the latest Java runtime version and go back to an older version (much older). That didn't work. I ended up uninstalling FF, trying to save all my extensions, configs, etc. then reinstalling with the hopes of copy the old data into the new profile. After 2 days of work, I gave up and had to reinstall all of the extensions and add-ons by hand. What a PITA! Something is corrupt somewhere..... That meant I had to manually extract every fscking 'real' file I wanted to restore from the subdirectories.....kind of a pointless method of backing up files....I'm going to give Vista's "Backup" software a try tonite, but it doesn't let you pick and choose what files/directories you want to backup....how stupid is that? What OS are you using? I did a search the other night and found some references to Microsoft KB documents, although none were helpful, but did list the error. And is this a work computer or a home computer? IPSec is a suite of technical protocols for encrypting network traffic between you and the end point. It's often key to virtual private networks (VPNs), things that your office tech might install so that you can connect from anywhere and appear as though you are in your cube. It's often transparent to the user, as they are protocols, rather than an application. This might be a contention issue - such as when your computer is booting, maybe the network isn't yet ready and configured, and IPSec sees some network connectivity, but not everything, and throws the error you see. Although it's hard to tell. What does your computer do at boot time? Any network drives mapped? AndrewB From avoozl at spamcop.net Thu Apr 9 06:15:02 2009 From: avoozl at spamcop.net (Chris F. Considering you read the error in event viewer. :) Basically, you have to goto your adminstrative tools area and look under Services. They'll be a rather extensive listing once you get that up. Find IPSec in there and see what the status is. Although "something" is stopping the computer from properly booting to windows. When boot up fails, ghosting a disk image back onto the HDD allows proper startup to windows. This alone is weird, why no start untill image replaced. Something corrupted AT SHUTDOWN? What I have done recently is to make a ghost image of the HDD just prior to shutdown and used that as noted above. The corruptions occurs DURING shutdown - this is not shown tin the event viewer because that history is overwritten with the ghost image. I can indicate one not to consider; Seagate/Maxtor. Same company now. They provide some Knoppix control software to do various things with them, especially the one-touch models and it's no end of headaches. Check their forums; you will see a lot of consistant, similar problems about it. Mine is a 1tB drive, 1-touch. Once I uninstalled/deleted all the software including the preinstalled stuff on the drive and managed to turn off the embedded "not programmed" error message, it finally started working as a regular drive. Beware, IMO, seagate/maxtor. I only bought the damned thing because I figured a 5-year warranty would be a solid drive. Oh, used it on a winXP Pro SP3. What a PITA! My IoGear drive was a piece of cake -- pure plug'n'play at it's best (I also used it with my old Win2K machine). Just plugged it in and it was ready to go, already formatted and partitioned, with nothing on it. Winbloze loaded the necessary drivers automagically. Corruption at any point of a file system worries me. Your hard drive might be failing, you might have some sort of insidious virus or malware, or somesuch. My recommended approach: - boot to Windows. Don't launch anything. Do an integrity and bad sector check (right click on the letter, Properties, Tools, Check Now). Do this for each drive letter on the drive. This may take some time, and it may require a reboot. If a reboot is necessary, it will run the check part of the way through the Windows boot sequence. I'm assuming errors will be found. Report what happens. - if you have something like SpinRite or a system tool that can check the integrity of your disk, let it run after you do a backup. - if you have a spare hard disk, move the image onto the new disk and see if the problem still occurs. If so, it's either something on the image, or something like the drive controller on the motherboard is flaking out. I'll let you know, I just ordered one that doesn't require external power on the recommendation of a co-worker - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HU4ASU He didn't like the software that came with it but found some other utility to manage the backups. Oddly enough when I looked it up on Amazon, it was $119, when I googled it and found a link to Amazon, it was $109 from J&R, now it's $117. I have no idea how that works but Worst Buy was selling them for $126 or so. Ooops....just saw the '1T' requirement, they don't come that big, I don't think - I would stay away from Maxtor anything though, new HD barely lasted me a year before bad sectors started showing up. Same company now. I always look for Maxtor. Had a number of their drives and all have been excellent. I've had two Maxtor USB drives. I never load the CD unless necessary, and then only to pick up any drivers required. My latest 1TB drive, with 5 year warranty, is performing faultlessly. I don't believe the boot time integrity check will check for bad sectors though. I think it just does the file system check, which can take forever on NTFS volumes. Note: I could be wrong. But if there is no file system fixes done, and if you have no bad sectors, it would appear that the flag written to the file system at shutdown saying "all clear; caches flushed" isn't getting set correctly. I have no idea why that would happen, but I'll ponder this in hallway discussions next week at the office. >> - if you have something like SpinRite or a system tool that can check >> the integrity of your disk, let it run after you do a backup. >> >> - if you have a spare hard disk, move the image onto the new disk and >> see if the problem still occurs. If you can boot into safe mode, check the event viewer for anything that is wrong. Also, you may want to check to see what is loaded into the OS and other programs running, versus normal mode. If you can boot into safe mode, shutdown, and boot into safe mode again repeatedly without the potential corruption problem, that would narrow the issue down to something between the two modes. Puzzling. Does your hard drive have a on-board memory cache? Maybe that went kaput. Ones that bypass the system to read the platters directly. Since the disk spins up, it's at least passing its own POST. If it's USB or FireWire there may be other options. Need more details. Good to hear that you at least do backups though. Silly question: Is a week's worth of backups really worth spending money to recover? Respectfully suggest you begin doing nightly incremental backups in that case and at least two external drives or create DVDs of the backups each time. Or at least DVDs of the critical data. With more details, there may be more things you can do. In this case, from what little you said, I'm going to guess that the freezer trick may not work out, but it's definitely worth trying. You cannot over-protect valuable data. I even keep a copy off site by swapping DVDs with my sister each month. I figured with a 5 year warranty I might have something in older technology, but with at least a good track record. IoGear is one of the possibilities I'm looking at for my second external. My other external is only 360 Gig and I want them both to be terabytes. Thanks for that mention. Did you buy it before or after the buyout? Mine's only 2-3 months old and the Knoppix software IMO has some really poorly written scripts with it like the designer didn't fully understand windows XP. I thought it was a little ironic too when I spotted the compatability note that the software wouldn't work on Linux machines. I'm curious whether we're talking about the exact same model: This one is a called a Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus. This is it here: http://www.seagate.com/support/onetouch/ot4plus_datasheet_dec07_us.pdf Are we talking about the same external drive do you think? Frankly, I looked forward to the software package but it was pretty disappointing, at least to me; it had some useful features I thought I might like. Then I discovered you had to disconnect it during a Restart on USB, so I switched to FireWire and bypassed that issue. It wasn't/isn't feasible to me to revert to the "legacy" USB drivers. Anyway, then the problems started so finally I got rid of all their software and used it bare-bones as nothing but a plain old drive and things settled down. Fortunately I got an excellent price on it so I don't feel cheated with the exception of the time it cost me. Left a bad taste though. Actually, if you havent' discovered their forums yet, you can see many others with the same problems I was having and no solutions and only a black hole for tech support. I'm Twayne there too so you can even see my own posts. Mostly I ended up just lurking and watching for solutions but they never appeared. I *think* that's where I discovered it might be a Seagate drive in the case, too. NBD & I don't care, but ... it did seem a little ironic. Woof! Sorry for writing a book! I do get carried away sometimes. But I'd find it very interesting if we have the same drive? Like I said....Maxtor bites.....which doesn't help FP. Any way to boot from a disk to a recovery/repair program? That was the only way I managed to get it temporarily fixed - did the built in hd repair (I had a Gateway), which seemed to fix enough of the bad sectors to get me up and running again so I could back some stuff up and reinstall the OS. KB is the MS Knowledge Base; a searchable set of articles about most anything windows. Very handy but requires patience. Have you tried looking up VSS at wikipedia? Often it'll have useful links to follow or search terms you can use. Didn't you mention Vista earlier? If so, a Google for vista +"vss failure" turns up some hits very, very similar to what you're talking about, I think, if memory serves me. I saw mentions of backups right there on the fist page of hits. Perhaps vista +backup +vss would be better search term; YES! Try that one first if you have Vista! HTH, Twayne A Google search on "vss failures" (WITH the quotes) gets a bunch of likely looking hits. A lot more hits without the quotes. If nothing else it might give you some more terms to search on. You could also try "volume shadow copy" and "volume shadow service" I guess. The sound will loop and nothing will happen until I hit the reset button. Even then sometimes I have to power the whole thing off to get it to reboot. At first I thought it was a problem with one of the games but when it started happening on another game, I knew it wasn't that. So I upgraded the video drivers, no dice. I ran chkdsk to look for corrupt files, nothing. I went into the BIOS and underclocked my video card slightly. Had one crash after that but so far it's mostly stable. The intermittent occurrence of this problem is the annoying aspect of it, since I have no idea how much longer to wait for it to show up. I contacted the manufacturer and asked for support. They didn't bother telling me to try anything, they simply said that they will give me an RMA number. Now I'm not complaining, but the RMA process involves them testing the card (naturally) but then they return the old card to me if they don't find anything wrong. As this problem is intermittent, it may not show up for them. I read online about many other people who are having an identical problem with the crashes, and the general consensus is that sending it back for RMA is the only permanent solution...as some feel it is a bad BIOS that is at fault. As the card is still under warranty for the next 2 years and 7 months, I am wondering if I should simply demand that they send me a new card regardless of what their tests find. Perhaps a power issue of some sort? I've had similar issues with my machine lately. I *think* what it turned out was that I didn't have the proper max refresh set for my monitor in the driver settings.. It could have been something else.. Not sure. ANyway.. From nobody at spamcop.net Tue Apr 21 19:43:17 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (Indigo) Date: Sat Apr 25 12:02:23 2009 Subject: [SpamCop-Geeks] How do you copy text from a dialogue box? Message-ID: I have a recurring error on my PC (HP Pavilion Touchsmart, Vista SP1) that started happening a while ago when I think I "overtinkered" with certain items in the "Docs and Settings" directory. Basically, I have created links to various subdirectories on my PC that I access frequently. Typically, when I click on the link for the first time since a disk cleaning op was run or I flushed out the RAM and File Cache (it's a TaskInfo tool for recovering RAM that closed apps held onto), I get an error message dialogue box saying that "windows cannot find (a very long character string). Actually, it's more than just a string, it's TWO long ones. After that first click on the link, for the most part, windows thereafter "remembers" the location and I don't get the error message until I wipe the memory again. The error messages look _exactly_ like this: ::{long character string 1}\::{long character string 2) Windows cannot find '::{long character string 1}\::{long character string 2)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. I've also found one Default link (windows made it, not me) that I get a similar error message every single time, but it's different from the other actions and dialogue boxes -- it occurs when I try to open my "contacts" in Windows Mail. I "may" have moved the location of the contact list at some point, it's currently located in C:\Users\myname\contacts. This error message sez: WinMail.exe Windows cannot find ". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. Now THAT is weird -- what the heck is " ? Note: eventually the directories will open using explorer.exe, and it doesn't wait for me to close the error box first. Now, on to what I *really* want to do: I captured both dialogue boxes with Snag-It and want to turn the image into text so I can search for those character strings on my C:\ drive, potentially discovering what is causing the problem. I tried running two OCR apps on the image file (ReadIris Pro and FreeOCR) both of which should have worked, but their output was just gobblygook. Anyone have any ideas on how to extract the text from the image? Is there something intrinsically different between a jpg file created from my scanner and one created by a screen capture app? And if after reading the description of my issues, does anyone already have a clue what is causing the problems? Hmmm....one last thing....I just clicked on "properties" for the contacts subdirectory and noticed that there is an option to "restore default location".....gonna click it and see what happens....nada...neither did changing the permissions or ownership of the directory. Still getting the error message. Still getting the error message. Try converting the images to bitmaps and see if your OCR can read them. And if your OCR has a "dot printer" setting, try that too. Usually if OCR has a problem it's because the images are too small for it to see enough detail to recognize. Sometimes upsizing them will work; sometimes not. Oh, and try using grayscale, not b&w, for your OCR attempts. If it's color convert it to gray scale. The images are indeed quite small. One improvement on the problem front: I fiddled with the permissions/ownership of my contacts directory, changing it to my main user account, and I just opened the contact directory without getting an error! That may be a key to determining the issue with the remaining links -- who "owns" them. I printed out a bunch of stuff from MS help on User Accounts, Permissions, and Ownership, I just need to play around with things a bit and I think I'll be able to fix that specific issue. As far as my most important problem, System Restore claiming that no restore points exist although Schedule Manager sez that a system restore point is successfully created every morning at 5:00 am, I still have to dig into that one....finding out where the system restore file is stashed is my first priority to see if anything exists there or not. For example, I start a program which crashes, and gives the "[program name] has stopped working" dialog. I press Ctrl-C, and the paste the clipboard here, between the lines of equal signs: ========== [Window Title] Microsoft Windows [Main Instruction] msgbox.exe has stopped working [Content] A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [Debug] [Close program] ========== Note that this is Vista, but I believe that XP works the same way. -- Kenneth Brody From nobody at spamcop.net Wed Apr 22 17:17:22 2009 From: nobody at spamcop.net (Indigo) Date: Sat Apr 25 12:06:41 2009 Subject: [SpamCop-Geeks] Re: How do you copy text from a dialogue box? I press Ctrl-C, and the paste the clipboard > here, between the lines of equal signs: Kewl. Thnxs for the tip! I'll have to try it next time I get the error, that is if I get it again. I *may* have fixed the issue (semi-accidentally?) yesterday, that is I think I _might_ have bungled into the solution without know it (I say "might" because if I say "did", well, you know how vengeful the M$ gremlins can get ;-). I was trying to fix the problem with my "contacts" folder error, a subset of the other errors I was getting. A long time ago I created a new user account (cursed Vista!) using my name and assigning it admin privileges, but I apparently created it improperly, which is very easy to do, because there's a box at the bottom of that dialogue box that is checked by default to "inherit rights from predecessor" or something like that. Whenever I went into that "rights and permissions" advanced section to change permissions because winbloze wouldn't let me write to the "Program Apps" directory when installing some, only some, pieces of new software, I noticed that the account I had created had a tiny red checkbox next to it, but I never understood what it meant. So to make a long story short, I deleted that apparently corrupt or crippled account, and assigned the owner of the contacts directory to the pre-existing myname/mycomputername account, which has full privileges. Voila! No more error message when accessing the address book! To top it off, a few minutes ago I ran a disk cleaner app and cleared all the memory caches, then clicked EVERY problem link that I was getting that other error message, and hell's bell's, no errors! I won't be fully satisfied that the problem is solved until I reboot and don't get any errors, but I *think* I have it licked. What that home-made UA was doing to cause problems I'll probably never know, I assume it has something to do with the "inherited privileges" thingie, but I really don't care. Oh, to top it off, after months of trying to repair the TV guide function on my TV tuner (at some point it failed to be able to update the TV schedule), last night IT STARTED WORKING TOO! I wonder if the problems were all linked somehow? Now to get System Restore/VSC service back to working properly......my labors are never over with this machine....mostly my fault for cleaning up the HD of junk I didn't think I needed.....simply deleting some things can have major consequences......particularly when they're in the Docs and Settings directory.... Check the attributes with "attrib c:\boot.ini", and then remove any of R/S/H that are there. (For example "attrib -s -h c:\boot.ini" to remove S and H.) Then, edit the file. You will see a line for each boot menu O/S choice, which will probably look like: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect To force boot logging, add the "/bootlog" flag to the end of the line. (I believe it needs a space before it, to separate the flags.) Restore the attributes you removed above, by using "+" instead of "-".
