I am a bit late answering, but when my son went on vacation, he
obviously sent a message to his addressbook that said that he would be
out of the office for one week and to contact so and so if necessary.
(that's if forwarding is not a possibility). Then I guess the person
returning just has to wade through the spam to see if anyone forgot and
emailed him anyway.
I don't see how someone could leave an email address unmonitored if
there were a lot of 'unknown' email addresses expected to be coming in
so notifying those who email you regularly should be sufficient.
