I don't know why you were having a problem with it, but "View Full Headers" 
will show "fancy" headers (note how they are all lined up) and a formatted 
body (HTML formatted in color, etc.), while CTRL+U will show the raw 
message.
You can close the preview pane and just select a message and press CTRL+U, 
that way you don't open the spam and don't download any images.
This also works in Mozilla and Thunderbird.
