Well, somebody brought Pac Bell someplace...

SBC is actually a fairly new company. After the breakup of AT&T, one of the
"Baby Bells" was called, "Southwestern Bell Telephone". I am not sure which
company they bought first, but they did go on a buying spree. Along the
way, they changed the name to just plain SBC. Their purchases include:

Ameritech Telephone (ameritech.net)
Pacific Telesys (nvbell.net, pacbell.net)
Southern New England Telephone (snet.net)
Prodigy (flash.net, prodigy.net, and wans.net)

They retired Southwestern Bell Telephone (swbell.net) when they created SBC
(sbcglobal.net).
