Damned if you do, damned if you don't. eh, Jason? (snip that is)
I, for one, am glad you moved the discussion here. And I wish more people
would address the problem which is that there are increasing numbers of
people who complain that replies in .help are not "polite." and they are not
the people who are asking the questions. I haven't done a scientific
search, but in one thread where even Ellen mentioned it, there was only one
post by someone who is, to me, unfamiliar, that I considered not polite and
even that one I didn't see as a "problem" - all the rest were "peer-to-peer"
answers. Another one, that I was involved in, did contain "helpful" answers
as well as completely deserved (IMHO) smart ass replies. Most reasonable
people (Guy is the most recent) don't get their panties in a bunch with the
whole ng or spamcop just because they have a heated exchange with a few.
Some seem to be able to even forget who and have normal exchanges later -
just like real life. (If one never spoke again to everyone, one has been
irritated with at one time or another, it would be a mightly lonely life
<end preaching>) And the third one, I don't know how you tell, but I
assumed that they only posted, not emailed the smart ass comments. It was a
mistake in judgment, but I am not able to throw any stones.
Otherwise, I really haven't seen what people are complaining about. But the
problem is that there are a significant number of people who do feel that
the tone in .help is not welcoming so IMHO, we(tinw) need to address that.
Particularly, if we are, in any way, interested in "education" of the
general public of how spam can be fought.
