Perhaps that is where the problem lies. One FAQ cannot cover both
eventualities of an end user asking the question or a server owner
asking the question. If the answer is aimed at the end user, it
has to assume that the questioner is not interested in the
technical details and point him to the people who can answer his
question (with just enough information to insist that his ISP *do*
something). If the answer is aimed at the server owner, then it
should contain information on how to find the evidence.
I have seen several times (the latest with Andrew) who found all
the replies to be rude and unhelpful until someone said the same
thing in very non-technical language. OTOH, the template for the
answer that I posted, would, I am sure, be considered useless to a
server owner and condescending. I haven't read Firewoman's version
yet. Writing manuals is very difficult I know from experience so
if she does it for a living, then she probably knows many of the
pitfalls which I have forgotten.
