IMHO, the profits that they are making are coming from getting wannabe
rich suckers to buy their software, lists, and spamming products. And
perhaps there are some virus writers who like the thrill of being a
nuisance and evading detection without the downside that writing a
real virus might have - if caught.
It may be possible still to make a living selling Viagra and herbal
remedies and some of the less scammy spam offers, but one doesn't hear
of those who sell those kinds of things offline to be rolling in
riches and I doubt that those online are either.
It all depends on whether you want to make a contribution to the world
by what you do for a living or whether you want to see how many people
you can cheat.
