Gandi is caught between a rock and a hard place.
On one side they have French laws (which are pretty much braindead because
drafted in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and totally unadjusted
to 21st century life) forbidding them from taking any action which could
be detrimental to their clients without proof of the client's wrongdoings
being received by registered snail-mail. On the other side they're
constrained to do *something* by the fact that the Internet is based on
cooperation - that or lose their ICANN accreditation.
Whatever Gandi has done to enable themselves to take action against spammy
domains, it is a welcome change. I just hope it won't create legal
problems for them further down the line because despite their reputation
abroad, looking at them from here (I happen to live in France) they
provide good service. I have a few domains with them and they do my DNS,
and there has never been a single problem.
