How do you deal with the problem of someone taking your e-mail address,
using it in the "from" section of their spam and then e-mailing it to
thousands of people. Now, not only do I get messages from flamers but also
hundreds of return mails. any help is appreciated

You can use spamcop to try to figure out where it is coming from, and
complain to that sysadmin. In my case, it was a zombied comcast customer
(who also had a zombied machine). It did stop after a couple of weeks.
