Yeah, I've run across a couple sites that used the referrer trick to
prevent images from loading in unless they were called from their own
website. I just drop those into FriedSpam.net, which downloads the entire
web page.
I suppose we'll see some very tricky spammers find a way around that
(although I couldn't imagine how, especially considering that I'm coming at
them from a large list of proxies, so they couldn't possibly block all the
IP addresses).
The SpamVampire is down right now... I'm doing some work on the code to add
in a throttle, so you can ease it back a bit and not consume all your
bandwidth and CPU. It's not easy... the code just doesn't want to play
nice. I got one iteration of a throttle working, but even with no delay the
added code (a setTimeout on each image loading) slowed the SpamVampire down
so much it wouldn't do the spammers any harm. And, oddly enough, it slowed
down even more over time! Not sure why. Any Javascript gurus out there?
Anyway, I'm slowly figuring it out, and it should be up and operational by
this evening.
