I did exactly that thing the other day, and I decided to live with it.
My current 'user friendly' name is now an EarthLink IP which is listed
all over the place and which I am hounding EL about.  I figgered I would
have to get a new address to make it go away, so I decided to keep it.

It's a stupid function anyway;  and to make it 'irreversible' is even
more stupid.  But, then so is putting something in there stupidly, so
we're all stupid.
