Wellll, it gives them a hit on their counter and a few other niceties just
by virtue of the connection, esp if it's for more than a few seconds.  .
Safety isn't the only reason, IMO, to avoid them like the plague.  Maybe I
was feeling a little over dramatic at the time though.
