For example, this tracker shows a very similar item from sightings.  I
changed the date so that it would parse, but it has almost exactly the
same structure and it parses.

Yours has some strange little 'quirks' - like its boundaries are
'misconfigured' by inappropriately ending with the two dashes instead of
just starting with them.  But, correcting that doesn't fix things.
