I'm still using the NYT, and I'm using my local newspaper online, which
also requires registration [since I'm also a subscriber it gives me
access to the archives as well] - but a newer type of registration has
come 'on the scene' for many newspapers.  It is strikingly similar
between them, like that of the WashPost, so I think there is some kind
of 'syndication' effect and they are all playing the same 'game'.

If no one cooperates and their readership and ad revenue go down, maybe
they will back off.
