The golden rule of confidence operations is to use OPM. "Other People's Money"
To do this you convince marks to invest money with the promises of future
return.
Getting media reports to show that a con-artist's business is making money,
no matter how slimy it is, will attract more marks to invest, non of them doing
any research to find out that more than 100% of the alleged potential profits
are already spoken for.
As in the show "The Producers", the con artist actually makes out the best when
they appear to have gone bankrupt. No one will expect that there is any money
left to be claimed. The con-artist can then use this as seed money for the
next scam.
It is even better when the con-artist can make it look like the scam would
have succeeded except for an unforseen event. That way the con-artist can
bilk the same marks over and over again.
The filing of a lawsuit could be just a ploy to milk some more money out of
the "investors" that have been waiting for some of the profits to trickle
down, and to attract new marks to the scam.
