On the basis that:

   a. Having to provide an email address serves no purpose other
than a means to send emails.

   b. Because they say:

When you register on MercuryNews.com you will have privileged
access to our articles and services, free of charge. By learning
a little about you, we are able to provide the kinds of
information, offers and services that are of the most interest
       to you.

   c. A sneakemail address given to a Knight Ridder subsidiary in the
       past has been spammed.

But hey, maybe spammy guessed the sneakemail address - that's why
I said "probably" instead of "definitely".
