A while ago there was an interesting thread where a guy who claimed
to be a lawyer pointed out that not all legal decisions are based
on laws written by legislators, but on precedence - the outcome of
other cases.
There are three branches of government in the US. Judges can be
removed by citizens due to misconduct; however, they are to make
decisions based on their intrepretation of the law. Their conduct
is judged by how they follow legal procedure, not on whether their
opinions are popular. If citizens don't like the way the legal
action goes, they can lobby the legislators to rewrite the law.
