It is unadvisable to phone ones police station here in the UK so most people
use the 999 Emergency Service - but that doesn't always get the police to
attend.
If you phone a met police station for a none emergency reason, the
centralised answering service, who answer all numbers ending in 1212, find
that even they cant always get through and that lines are constantly engaged
at certain times of the day.

Feeling lucky, I phoned the CID at Marylebone Police Station and after only
a short delay got through. Although they were very helpful and sympathetic,
they referred me to the Computer Crime Unit at New Scotland Yard (
0207-230-1212 switchboard) - who couldn't put me through to DC Andy Cookson,
the guy in charge, surprise surprise - so left I left a voice message.
Perhaps others will have better luck.

What ever happened to Whitehall 1212 ? it was so much more memorable number.

I will not be holding my breath.
