There's another entirely different version of that story than the one the
spindocs put on it.

When I read that BBC one, I found myself asking some questions about the
wording of the chain of events that seemed a little fuzzy, so I did some
more searching.

The story I believe is the one where a guy turned his raft upside down in
the rapids, banged his head and was in some real danger -- along came 2
other rafters, rescued him, and took him to shore conscious and seated.
They then quickly took off after his raft and equipment, at some
significant peril to themselves, while he dazedly sat ashore wiping his
bloody brow. Along came Prescott and his aides, who apparently had seen
the incident at a distance from shore, and 'helped' the man some more.

By the time the two rafters who not only saved the guy [Graham Cook] but
also imperiled themselves to fetch his gear got back about 10 minutes or
so later -- everyone was busy handing out medals to Prescott and his
team. Then they made some publicity photos and along came the revised
publicity version of the events. Prescott, 66, has a reputation as a
scuba diver, so the story went down well.

If the rescuers had just ignored the loss of his equipment and sat by the
shore holding his hand or 'escorting' him to the aid station, there
wouldn't have been such a golden opportunity for the publicity hounds.

So was Prescott really the hero?
this has not gone down well with Darren Whaley and Adam Devitt-Spooner -
expert canoeists - who claim it was they and not Prezza who snatched Mr
Cook from the waters
