I think you can do this with the XP Internet Firewall, or was that in the
Internet Security/Privacy zone. Or other firewalls should allow wildcard
domains.
With *NIX it's built-in. You can add zones to named.conf which point to the
same "dummy" DNS file, which can contain the "*" subdomain.
But the easiest way is probably to use the AdBlock features of Opera,
Mozilla or Firefox. Especially since the other methods won't block IPs or
directories. Also, since the requested file won't exist on 127.0.0.1, the
browser will have to "time out" which can slow down page rendering.
