I am a former Charter customer. At the time I left them the previous
contact I had with them is that they changed the default gateway for my
static I.P. address and did not notify me.

It took well over a month to figure this out. The last e-mail I got
from Charter was a notice that the call was closed with the reason
"customer misconfigured equipment".

That equipment was set to the last setting that Charter had supplied
with no changes for over a year.

Get with the the other users and with the local politicians that are on
the franchise board. Even though they only regulate the TV, you will
find that the someone will pay attention to franchise board from the
cable company, especially if it is close to contract renewal, or if any
of the terms of the contract are not being complied with.

There are plenty of free ones out there.

I can SMTP auth through port 587 on a gmail server for instance. And
that is just one of my options outside of my ISP.

Once you set up the gmail account through the web page, you never have
to go to that web page again. Full IMAP and SMTP access is available.
