Also, supposedly, many whois servers limit the
number of queries per IP address per day.
(Ironically, this is partly a database-stealing
anti-spam measure.) Using Sam Spade tools
and their ilk from their respective servers will
sometimes work, but also often runs into this
limit. This is not an issue if you're running the
downloaded version of the tools, locally (unless
you're doing a gazillion whois queries a day
from that IP address, which can also happen
with large corporate networks running from
behind a single NAT with a limited address
range allocation.)
