As in anything else, some will sacrifice a lot and others
rationalize that it doesn't make a lot of difference.
But, in the end, it will be the consumer who will turn the tide
against spam. One person objecting with their pocketbook won't,
IMHO, do much. However, if there were someone like Ralph Nader to
get the ball rolling and publicize how sprint and others are not
doing anything to stop spam, something might happen. There is a
book about the Turning Point that might interest you.
