Around the time of the US revolt, thte Brits went "metric", and the gallon
was redefined as 10lbs of water. Other standards were also changed which is
why the American foot is slightly different from imperial. (Surveyors know
this). At that time the official position of the US was that it would go
metric and there are references to that in some of the early legislation and
perhaps even the constitution, so there was no point in following Imperial
standards, if they were going to go "French" so to speak, and besides, at
that time they "warn't gonna do like England nohow".
