    There's nothing anywhere that says that the top-level domain
    must have an A record w/IP address assigned to it.
    Perfectly normal setup.

    Helps reduce the number of people trying to poke holes in your
    server(s).

    e.g.
www:bll$ host gentoo.com                # no ip address
www:bll$ host -t mx gentoo.com
gentoo.com mail is handled by 2 mail.gentoo.com.
www:bll$ host mail.gentoo.com
mail.gentoo.com has address 64.169.54.66
www:bll$
