This isn't aimed at anyone in particular; just trying to clarify what I
see as the/a question, because I see some confusion arising here.

I'll address it from an OE point of view, which I understand; I'm
assuming it is essentially the same with other mua/s.

I can toggle any OE mailstore item as read or unread. The OE mailstores
are actually .dbx proprietary db files which 'appear' as individual
items in a 'folder'. Unread appears bolded. That 'condition' of a mail
as read or unread isn't any kind of change to the headers of the mail;
it is a change in its 'pointers' as I call them, which OE keeps a record
of. It similarly does such a thing for news messages, but let's don't
go there.

There is such a thing as a Status: U mailheader created by a smtp server
because I get it 'regularly' from my provider EL - which is about the
only thing I can think of which uses that header for anything. As I
explained and cited earlier, it is an 'oddball' and fundamentally unused
header.

Except for what Berny said were his experiences, I would've thought that
the server wouldn't change anything about an email message if someone
downloaded it and left it on the server; which is what Indigo is saying
about an imap account, the messages appear to the mua as unread. I
would also think that if I downloaded an item and left it on the server
and downloaded the same item with another different mua, that the item
would appear as unread.

I can't argue with Berny about his experiences unless I can perform an
experiment which will disprove that behavior on EL's or gmail's server.

I still don't have a clue about what Trish is talking about. That is, I
think I know what she is saying, but currently I have no understanding
of what I'm hearing.
