I learnt that some decades ago. A and B can't give to each other. O can give
to anybody (but not vice-versa) because it has no "markers" (antigenes). AB
can receive from all others (but not vice-versa) because it already has all
the markers. Rh- can give to Rh+ but not vice-versa; however it may work the
first time because the antibodies aren't there yet, and by the time it takes
to make them, the antigene will have disappeared. All that makes O-
"universal donor" and AB+ "universal receiver". It's an almost algebraic
thing.
But that's for blood. I hear there are tissue groups too, but I never learnt
the details of that.
