It is my fervent hope that something like that is brought in here too.
People driving honking great commercial sized vehicles as their own
personal transportation should be paying way more in taxes to cover the
cost of environmental destruction, not to mention the additional stress
they put onto the road surface itself.
That said, there are many more 'normal' sized vehicles on the road in
the US today than there were when I first visited the country back in
the early 80s. People were then driving tanks and you rarely saw
anything the size of a Honda Civic. I believe it was even worse in the
early 70s, before the first of the petrol crises. I believe the trend
will move away from these super-large SUVs that are so popular at the
moment, especially if the price of gas does continue to rise. It's now
double what it was a couple of years ago which is pretty painful by
anyone's standard.
