Cream ale is (should be) like an American Lager (Bud, Coors etc).  It is 
just a light ale.  Maybe you got a bad batch?  

There is a brewpub near me that makes a vanilla cream ale.  It tastes just 
like something that you would get from the megabrews, but it has a hint of 
vanilla in it.  Kind of different, kind of good.
