This is in the form of a company memo sent to my mom's office about a
potentially serious new form of ATM fraud.

> Fernando Henry just came into my office and asked me to alert everyone to
> a possible problem with their bank accounts (specifically ATM Fraud).
>
> Fernando told me that he just discovered that from Halloween (Oct. 31)
> through yesterday (Nov. 6), that someone had fraudulently withdrawn $2200
> from his personal bank account. He notified his bank of the problem and
> they told him that they are seeing an increase in this type of theft. The
> bank told him that these individuals steal blank ATM cards and then watch
> when people use the ATM (watching for their personal codes as they enter
> them on the keypads). When the customer leaves the ATM, these thieves
> then put the blank card into the ATM machines and enter the prior
> customer's personal ATM code. The machine will then give this individual
> all the information regarding the prior customer's bank account. . . and,
> though Fernando did have his ATM card in his possession, they were able to
> systematically withdraw $2200 from his account (actually taking $600 in
> one day at various locations).
>
> So, we want to make sure to remind everyone that this is the holiday
> season and unfortunately this can increase the possibilities of theft and
> these types of activities.
>
> Fernando wanted me to urge everyone to monitor their bank accounts on a
> regular basis and immediately report any suspicious activity on your
> account to the proper individuals at your bank. The bank officials told
> Fernando that this is really the responsibility of the account holder to
> closely review their account on a daily basis.
>
> We are hoping that this situation gets resolved quickly for Fernando . .
> . . and I want to thank him for his suggestion.
>
> Thank you,
>
