Because it is artificial, it leads thought and attitudes away from
the basic reason for sex which is procreation. Babies become an
unwanted consequence instead of a natural phenomenon. And that
leads to a devaluing of life. The church now says pro-life is a
'seamless garment' (an allusion to the garment Jesus wore on the
way to the cross) from pre-birth to death and many preachers do see
a connection between the attitudes that support abortion and the
attitudes that support euthansia (and I am not talking about
difficult cases such as Terry S). (though it is only the ones who
are really reflective. it has led some to be pacifists and anti
capital punishment. Oddly, the more vocal pro-lifers are also
ardent advocates of capital punishment.)

The Church does not preach against birth control as in planning for
children within a marriage - just artificial birth control. And as
others have pointed out, sex outside of marriage is sinful any way.

When I was young, I thought that the Church was nuts (and I still
think that one could use artificial birth control without being
sinful), but as I have seen the consequences of artificial birth
control in attitudes toward sex and life, I am not so sure that it
is a bad position to take. Natural is always better than
artificial in sex as well as food.
