Maybe this is one of the occasions where speaking your mind would not be
construed as a flame.

Let me speak mine. The kids I've seen go overboard were raised in
traditional family values.

Two years ago, I tripped over two drug addicts in the stairwell of my
apartment bulding. They had pried open the door to get in and weren't
impressed with my pleas to leave. They weren't impressed with me calling
the police either ("they'll never come, you've got nothing on us"). When
the cops were on their way, they split up and I had to be careful to
stay within legal boundaries to corral one of them into the long arm of
the law (this was not easy, given that I was seeing red at the obvious
breach of my private space and their total disrespect for same).

I later found out that the girl from this couple had been part of a
loving family I knew well, that (up 'till the divorce) I thought was the
perfect family. Soft spoken, church going, the works.

The experience didn't damage my valuing traditional family values. I
think they are an essential part in raising a kid. But I can assure you
that losing touch with your kid can happen to the best of us. And by the
same token, that trying to hide the in-crowd meaning of words like f***,
s***, s*gar or anything like that will not deter your kid from trying to
find out.

There's so much truth in the old joke... A couple sit at breakfast with
their kids, and mom mouths to pop, "darling, we left the C-*-N-D-*-M on
the P-*-T-*-O", and the kid asks, "mom, what's a patio?"
