Speaking of "securing the borders," one often hears the toss-off solution: 
"use the military."

During the Battle of the Bulge, the 101st Airborne held 21 miles of the 
front by itself and the division was stretched mighty thin.

We have 2100 miles of border with Mexico. At the same density as the Battle 
of the Bulge we would require 100 divisions of infantry.

We have twelve (10 Army and two Marine). Then there's Canada. Plus the 
coastline.
