IIRC, Steven Hawkings (and I don't know if this is still a current
theory) had started to think that the universe was an endless
loop - that there was no 'start' or 'end' - which doesn't fit with
the concept of a god-creator, but does fit with man being one with
a Higher Being and continuing in spirit after death.
And I don't think that this 'god' stuff is fairly recent for humans
(at least, in the evolutionary scale, there is evidence that
shortly after we became a distinct species, we have sought the
'why' and created explanations). And one doesn't know what animals
believe.
