| You are under the mistaken impression that we "give" money to countries
| out of the kindness of our hearts. Generally, we give money to bring
| them under tighter control. We buy off which ever dictator is running
| the place at the expense of the citizens. We create large debts so that
| they have to compromise their own sovereignty to pay them off (see above
| and the part about paying off the dictator). Foreign aid isn't about
| helping other countries, it is about opening access to their markets and
| at the very least, stabilizing them so that we can sell them stuff and
| utilize their resources.
|
| I suppose much of the aid to even US citizens is much the same. The aid
| isn't meant to help them or to lift them up, it is all about giving them
| just enough to keep them from demanding more and from rebelling against
| the government. If you want to see kindness in action, check out the
| hurricane relief act. You might notice that the 900 billion isn't
| coming from rolling back tax cuts but from finally killing off programs
| (kindly enough, under the cover of rebuilding after the hurricane) that
| they have been dreaming of killing off for years like the National
| Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and
| Amtrak, and subsidized student loans, and school lunch programs, huge
| cuts in Medicare and Medicaid, and much more. Seriously, if they are
| that compassionate towards their own citizens, you really think there is
| any compassion for other countries?
|
| So yeah, about GW and company stepping in and helping out with heating
| costs, whatever, dream on. I expect to see quite a few people freezing
| to death this winter. I imagine some states will try and step in and
| help out but their budgets are mostly totally stretched already due to
| increased federal mandates and decreased federal funding.
BINGO!! Compassionate Conservatism == I feel your pain -- deal with it!
