You can deliver a much higher dosage of antibiotics via IV, but the
dangers of Toxic Shock (or similar) are greater, hence the need for
observation. Its the best way of giving antibiotics, but for obvious
reasons, it costs more, and isn't always used.
I've had pneumonia 3 times. Twice in the UK, once in the US. Both
times in the UK, a course of antibiotics and fully over it in 3-4 weeks.
Had it one time in the US, diagnosed on the Monday, took me to the
treatment room, give me 3 IV dosages of antibiotics over 3 hours,
observed me for another 3 hours. I was fit again in under a week.
